Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases arise from an inappropriate immune responses of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. In other words, the immune system mistakes some part of the body as foreign and attacks its own cells. This may be restricted to certain organs or a particular tissue type. The treatment of autoimmune diseases is typically limited to immunosuppression with medications that decrease the immune response.

The Functional Medicine approach insists on understanding why the immune system has become hyperreactive, and mistakenly identified the body’s own tissues as foreign.  Cross reactivity from food allergens, or immune dysruption from external environmental toxins may be part of the picture.   When these causes are eliminated, the bodys own systems are able to respond more normally.
